Aesthetic Procedures After Obesity

Aesthetic procedures after obesity

(post-bariatric surgery)

Developed countries have recognized that most important epidemic disease of today is “obesity”. Increased calorie intake and decreased physical activity have led to a high rise in the number of obese people in society.

Obesity is a serious health problem in later ages, besides it is not acceptable for current aesthetic perception. This is why obese people make a lot of effort to lose weight.

Therefore, bariatric/obesity surgery (sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass etc) has become very common today. After these procedures, people lose weight quickly and regain their health. For the most part, however, the skin can not accompany this slimming process. The skin, which is excessive and stretched when fatty and obese, sags with the loss of weight and unacceptable folds and looseness occur.

This point is where aesthetic procedures (post-bariatric surgery) come into play.

With the post bariatric surgery procedures, wherever the body is sagging, that area can be lifted, reshaped and stretched (abdominal stretching, breast lift, 360 body lift, thigh lift, arm lift, face lift, back stretching etc).

How long after obesity surgery (sleeve, bypass…) can aesthetic procedures be performed?

There are some criteria to start aesthetic procedures after obesity surgeries:

1. At least 15 months must have passed since obesity surgery.

2. You must have lost all the weight you targeted. You should not have plastic surgery while still losing weight.

3. You should wait 3 months after weight loss is completed  for your body to stabilize and your skin to strech.

People who lose weight rapidly after obesity surgery usually rush and want to start aesthetic operations as soon as possible. It is very important to be patient and wait until you lose all the weight. Early operations may require revisions in the future.

Are aesthetic procedures difficult after obesity?

Post-bariatric procedures take longer and are more complicated than other aesthetic applications. Proper shaping of the remaining skin is as important as proper removal of the sagging skin.

People who have had bariatric surgery may also have many metabolic problems such as various vitamin and mineral deficiencies (B12, iron, zinc..), anemia, insulin resistance and protein deficiency. Therefore, it requires exclusive preparation and close post-operative follow-up.

These preparations are made carefully before the procedure in collaboration with the surgeon and anesthesiologist team.

And after the operation, the process is set comfortably with close follow-up in the hospital.

Isn't it better if we do all the procedures at once?

Post-bariatric surgery requires working in larger areas than other aesthetic applications. The loose skin that will be removed is generally too much and the areas that will be reshaped and recovered are exceedingly sagged. Therefore, operations take longer and create large gaps. Post-operative care, lying positions, healing process are also characteristic for each operation.

For that reason, bariatric surgery procedures, in general, can be performed only in stages. Performing all procedures in one session requires a very long operation time and the post-operative process is very difficult. Blood loss is high, recovery becomes harder, complication risk increases. This is why staging is always safer and more efficient in terms of healing. Depending on the person's condition, combinations such as tummy tuck-breast lift, arm lift-thigh lift, 360 body lift-arm lift can be performed.

It is possible to finalize all of the stretching operations in 2-3 sessions.

How many months should there be between sessions?

Operations can be performed with an interval of 2-3 months. It is important to wait for the previously operated area to heal and the blood level to come back to normal.

What is 360 body lift?

360 body lift (belt lipectomy) is a procedure usually performed after excessive weight loss. It provides shaping of the abdomen, waist and buttock areas in the same session. We frequently begin post-bariatric procedures with a 360 body lift. Thus, the middle and central part of the body is shaped first.

Where will the scars remain after the 360 body lift procedure?

After this procedure, the scars are at the bottom, as in the abdominal stretching, at the level of cesarean section and remain in the underwear. And from here, it goes towards to the butt curve. With meticulous planning, scars can remain unseen in underwear or bikini.

In people who have lost too much weight, a vertical incision (from the middle of the rib cage to the pubic area) may also be needed to achieve a more tight result and reveal a more beautiful waist curve. In this case, there is another scar in the middle, but as a result, more stretched and smooth abdomen-waist contour is obtained.

When I lost weight, my butt became droopy and emptied. What can we do?

The butt area, which is plump and high while overweight, empties when weight is lost and goes down.

The only way to raise the butt again is to remove excess skin and sagging tissues from this area and stretch the rest. While doing this, the tissues that should actually be removed can be formed as a prosthesis with stitches and filled into the butt. This way you will have a butt prosthesis made from your own tissues that will remain intact for life (autoprosthesis).

Applying a silicone prosthesis into the butt area or injecting fat instead of applying autoprosthesis is not going to work in the post-bariatric patient group. On the contrary, it can lead to more complicated problems to fix.

With the application of autoprosthesis, an upright and plump butt can be achieved.

This procedure can be performed during 360 body lift.

Can I get pregnant after having a 360 body lift?

You must prevent pregnancy at least one year after this procedure. It's okay to get pregnant after a year. You can give birth conveniently.
